The Wines of Chablis A Comprehensive Guide to the World's Most Famous White Wine

Fourchaume

Fourchaume is generally considered (along with Montee de Tonnerre) to be the finest premier cru of Chablis. The five primary sous-climats are l’Homme Mort, Fourchaume, Vaupulent, Cote de Fontenay and Vaulorent. The heart is of course la Fourchaume itself, and its best wines are capable of great heights. Wines located above the road are generally the oldest and original parcels that were present prior to the expansion of the vineyards in 1978. The deep nose is reminiscent of mousserons, with fresh, herbaceous aromas of meadows and the stony, minerality of underlying soil. The full, concentrated palate hints of cream, honey and quince, and is texturally very buttery and deep. With its power and length it is among the best Premiers Crus, and can age well for 5 to 10 years or more.
